The Trent Athletics Centre is following the University’s approach to implement preventative health and safety measures in response to COVID-19 concerns, announcing temporary closure of the Allan Marshall Pool and Rowing Tank, along with a number of cancellations to aquatics and fitness programs, effective March 14 through April 30.
“The health and safety of our community, which includes students, faculty, and staff, as well as many community members, is our top priority,” says Deborah Bright-Brundle, director of Athletics and Recreation at Trent. “We are taking concerns over the spread of the virus very seriously given the number and diversity of visitors to the AC every day, and encourage those who choose to continue using available facilities to practice sanitation tips recommended by health agencies.”
The sport centre at the Athletics Centre, which includes the cardio loft and weight room facilities, is currently unaffected by the changes and will remain open for use by Trent students and community members with regular hours of operation. Enhanced cleaning and sanitization practices, which have been underway at the facility for several weeks, will continue.
The temporary closure of the pool and the rowing tank has direct impact on both internal and external groups. Facility rentals for both internal (e.g. Trent student clubs) and external rental groups (e.g. community sport groups, birthday parties) will be cancelled for the duration of the scheduled closures.
In addition, the Athletics Centre is also cancelling the following sport, aquatics and fitness programs: all swimming lessons, aquatic leadership courses and First Aid; group fitness classes, including Aquasize; varsity practices and exhibition games; the Varsity Annual Athletics Banquet for student-athletes; rock wall and squash courts access; Junior NBA; judo; and Learn to Row.

In an effort to follow hygiene and health best practices, the Athletics Centre will also stop providing yoga mats, basketballs, squash racquets, yoga blocks, and all small sport equipment lending from Saturday, March 14 through to April 30.
These changes follow Trent’s move to temporarily suspend classes at its Peterborough and Durham GTA campuses from Friday, March 13 until Tuesday, March 17. During this time, the University will make plans to deliver classes online or through alternative means of delivery beginning Wednesday, March 18.
Trent’s two campuses, offices and residences remain open, with other University operations continuing.
