A Peterborough Police Service dog played a big role in arresting a theft suspect in Cavan Monaghan last night.
Just after 11pm, police were called after suspects broke into a garage at a home on Larmer Line and apparently stole a Honda dirt bike, dirt bike helmets, and a television in a box. A neighbor in the area noticed the suspicious activity and called police.
Following the incident the suspects fled into a wooded area nearby. Officers and the K9 Unit were dispatched to the scene.
K9 Officer Cowie and Police Service Dog Isaac conducted a track and located the male suspect hiding in a densely wooded swamp. The male was placed under arrest and during a search was found to be in possession of several break-in tools including bolt cutters, a flashlight and a hammer. The property stolen during the incident was located at the scene and recovered.
Charged is 28 year old Munden Smith of Barrie, with:
- Break and enter
- Possession of break-in instruments
- Trespassing at night
- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
The accused was held in custody and is scheduled to appear in court later today.
The investigation is ongoing.
