The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario is asking the province to change up its strategy on vaccinations.
In a statement put out yesterday, the union called on the government to make education workers and other essential workers be prioritized for vaccinations. Officials say until that happens, they’d like to see a temporary move from in-person to virtual learning in hot spots.
President Sam Hammond says the government, school boards and public health units must take immediate action to ensure students and staff are safe. Education Minister Stephen Lecce said last week schools are safe, noting 74% don’t have any cases at all. The union also once again asked for a reduction in class sizes to ensure two metres of physical distancing.
The ETFO says it plans to meet again today.
