UPDATE: It was previously reported that the Freedom Convoy would be passing through Peterborough with a stop at Crestwood, however it has been clarified that supporters would instead be meeting at Crestwood before heading to Port Hope to support the convoy on the 401.
As truckers across Canada continue to make their way to Ottawa this weekend to protest vaccine mandates, a group of supporters in Peterborough may have to find a new spot to meet.
The Freedom Convoy, which says up to 50,000 truckers could take part in, will be going down the 401 this weekend, while some supporters in Peterborough will be meeting at Crestwood Secondary School at 5:30am Saturday before making their way down to the convoy.
Yesterday, the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board said Crestwood would not be available, as permission is needed to use the school property because it’s private property.
It is unclear as of Thursday morning whether or not the group still plans to use Crestwood despite the note from the school board, or if another location is being considered.
The federal government says all foreign nationals working as truckers would have to be fully vaccinated to enter Canada. Those not fully vaccinated are to be turned back to the US. As for Canadian cross-border essential workers (including truckers), they must also show proof of vaccination or be PCR tested with a negative result before they can enter.
Organizers say these mandates are placing more of a strain on a supply chain that has already seen shortages throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
Truckers travelling within Canada are not affected by these new measures. The US has implemented a similar mandate, requiring that all US-bound travellers show proof they’ve had the required shots.
