History was made at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Wednesday night as Lakers superstar Shawn Evans established himself as the Mann Cup’s all-time leading scorer.
The Peterborough native went into last night’s game tied with John Tavares for most Mann Cup points but it didn’t take long for Evans to break the record, picking up an assist in the first period of action.
The game was paused for a moment as the crowd of over 3200 gave him a standing ovation as the record was announced on the arena’s PA. Evans would add three more assists in the game, giving him a four-point cushion on the lead.
In 47 Mann Cup games, Evans has 47 goals and 160 assists, which is also the most assists in Mann Cup history.
Along the way to breaking the record, Evans passed lacrosse legends such as Paul Gait, Colin Doyle, Geordie Dean and John Grant Jr., as well as his older brother Scott, who was quick to (jokingly) point out that he is still 19 Mann Cup goals ahead of younger brother Shawn.
It’s now a family affair on the top 50 all-time Mann Cup points list, with Shawn at number one with 207 points, Scott in seventh spot with 121 points and their father Paul at number 40 with 69 points.
Evans will have another chance to add to his totals with game 6 going tomorrow night at 8pm, in a game where the Lakers have the opportunity to capture their 18th Mann Cup in franchise history, which would be a new Canadian Lacrosse Association record.
