With the first Ontario Cadets Week declared for October 1st to 7th, those at the helm of Peterborough’s cadet squadrons are the extolling the character-shaping benefits of membership for young people between the ages of 12 and 18.
Lieutenant Commander Matthew Veals, the commanding officer of Peterborough’s 534 Peterborough Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, says the leadership skills acquired by cadets provide a positive long-lasting effect.
112 Sea Cadets Leftenant Paulette Prentice says peer-led programming offered by cadets is a huge benefit to young people.
Looking ahead, Lieutenant Commander Veals says a conscious effort to adapt to changing times and demands is being made by cadets via self-evaluation.
On Monday, October 3rd at City Hall, a flag will be raised to mark Ontario Cadets Week.
The Peterborough cadets program is supported by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 52, the Peterborough Naval Association, the Air Cadet League and the Sea Cadet League.
