There will be a Peterborough presence at this year’s World U17 Hockey Challenge taking place in British Columbia next month. Peterborough native Porter Martone was named to the Team Canada Red roster earlier this week.
The tournament is returning for the first time since 2019 and along with Canada, it will feature Czechia, Finland, Sweden and the United States.
This will be Martone’s first time representing his country on the world stage, something he says he’s dreamt about since he was a little kid.
Martone said he received the news last week and immediately called his parents, who he credits for a lot of his success.
The Sarnia Sting rookie says he’s not only looking forward to the hockey, but also meeting his new teammates and making new friends.
More than 1,800 NHL draft picks have suited up since the 1986 inception of the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge (previously known as the Quebec Esso Cup), including 16 first-overall draft picks since 2001. Some notable names include Ilya Kovalchuk, Alexander Ovechkin, Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews.
The World U17 Hockey Challenge is set to get underway from Langley, BC, on November 3rd, with TSN and RDS providing the coverage.
