Peterborough native Bob Gainey will be inducted into the brand-new Dallas Stars Hall of Fame that is set to be unveiled later this month.
Gainey was the Coach and General Manager of the Stars from 1993-96 before stepping down as coach to focus solely on the GM duties, winning the Stanley Cup in 1999. It was his sixth Stanley Cup, after winning five as a player with the Montreal Canadiens. He remained as GM of Dallas until 2002.
Gainey says he was caught by surprise when he got the induction call from Dallas, just prior to the NHL draft.
The NHL legend will be part of the first class of inductees along with Derien Hatcher, whom he made captain of the Stars at age 23, and says it’s an honour to enter the Hall of Fame alongside someone who has had that much of an impact on the franchise.
The Peterborough Petes alumnus was a part of the Minnesota North Stars organization when they moved to Dallas in 1993, and although there were already several established sports teams in Texas, he says the team was welcomed with open arms.
The first ever Dallas Stars Hall of Fame induction ceremony is set to place on October 30.
