A local filmmaker has come away a huge winner from the recent Canadian International Comedy Film Festival in Winnipeg, taking home Best Canadian Film honours.
Matt Snell wrote, directed and produced Schnitzelback for which he also acted along with friends who are members of the Peterborough filmmaking collective Cathedral Hill Productions.
Snell, who attended the festival with his wife, says the film was made in 2020 despite challenges presented by the pandemic.
The film has at its core a tribute polka music act created by the central character to celebrate his love of the Nickelback and his solution to not being able to perform the band’s songs in Polish live during COVID.
Snell says film features all the ingredients needed to make it work.
Snell, who also won an Award of Excellence at the 2021 Canada Shorts Film Festival, is now working on another film scheduled for release next year. Huge help with that project has come via a grant recently awarded him by the Electric City Culture Council.
