A pig isn’t necessarily the first animal you think of as a pet but Sarah Hayden is trying to change that public perception.
Hayden is the founder of The Pearly Acre, a pig sanctuary that allows you the opportunity to go into the pig pen to spend time, touch, and learn about the 15 pigs that are on site.
The Pearly Acre is a non-for-profit sanctuary, located just outside of Peterborough, in Havelock, that houses and cares for misplaced and abused animals, specifically pigs.
Hayden says the idea for a sanctuary came to her after she adopted her first pet pig, Bullet, back in 2017. While researching information and networking with other pig owners, she felt there was a need for a sanctuary that not only showcases these great animals, but more importantly, educates them too.
Guided, educational tours of the Pearly Acre are available every Saturday at 12 p.m., through pre-booked appointments. To book your tour, email ThePearlyAcre@gmail.com.
