Peterborough’s favourite golf tournament run by local heroes just announced its schedule for this year. Jack’s Annual Peterborough & District Sports Hall of Fame Golf Tournament is tee’ing off its 36th year on June 1st.
Named after Peterborough Hall-of-Famer and tournament co-founder, Jack Gibson, the event gathers Peterborough locals together at the Peterborough Golf and Country Club for a fun tournament with a “reunion-like quality”, as explained by Jack’s son, Doug Gibson.
The Hall of Fame has been preserving Peterborough’s sports history since the late 70’s. Doug’s father was inducted into the Hall of Fame in ‘86 and Doug says it was very soon afterwards that he became involved in managing the Hall’s operations through this newly-found golf tournament.
The preservation of Peterborough’s sporting history is taken care of by volunteers who collect donations from the community, something Hall of Fame chairperson, Patricia Bronson, says is a testament to the community’s passion.
The tournament’s $200 Entry Fee directly supports the Hall of Fame’s yearly operations. Doug explains that the preservation of the memorabilia donated to the Hall is fundamental to the community sports have provided Peterborough for a hundred years.
This year the tournament features a new prize package in memory of co-founder of the tournament, Bob McGillen, whose fondness for the Montreal Canadiens inspired a package that will feature a signed Bob Gainey sweater, two Canadiens tickets, and a hotel stay for two.
The proceeds of this prize package will support young Peterborough athlete’s academic success, through the Hall of Fame’s yearly bursary for graduating high school students.
