The Peterborough Public Library opened its new Legacy Space this past weekend, the goal being to foster understanding, connections and a path toward reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.
An initiative of the Gord Downie and Charlie Wenjack Fund, the designation identifies the local library as a safe, welcoming place where conversations around, and education of, Indigenous history are encouraged and supported. Library CEO Jennifer Jones says the objectives of both the library and the fund fit well together.
Jones notes the library is ideally located to be a Legacy Space, geographically at the centre of the local Indigenous community.
Jones clarifies the entire library, not just one part of it, is now identified as a Legacy Space.
