Extendicare has announced plans to rebuild their current long-term care home in Peterborough. The redevelopment aims to improve the quality of life for residents and meet the growing demand for high-quality care in the region. The new facility will feature modern design standards and an increased capacity to accommodate more seniors in need.
With the redevelopment project, Extendicare intends to address the pressing issue of long-term care waitlists in the province. The new home will welcome not only the existing residents but also an additional 84 individuals from the long-term care waitlist. This expansion will result in a total capacity of 256 beds, allowing more Peterborough seniors to access the care and support they require.
One of the significant improvements in the new long-term care home is the significant increase in square footage per resident. The larger space will enhance resident privacy and enable more room for family connections. The improved facilities will also better support the growing care teams, providing them with the necessary space and resources to deliver high-quality care.
In line with the commitment to resident comfort, each resident will have their own bedroom, promoting a sense of individuality and personal space. This change acknowledges the importance of privacy and personalization in the well-being of seniors.
The new facility will boast a redesigned model focused on fostering a stronger sense of community and comfort. It will consist of eight self-contained communities, with each community accommodating 32 residents. Each community will have its dedicated dining rooms, activity spaces, and communal lounges, allowing residents to socialize and engage in various group activities.
To further enhance the living environment, the new long-term care home will provide several outdoor courtyards and visiting spaces that are accessible to all residents and their families. These spaces will offer opportunities for relaxation, recreation, and quality time with loved ones.
In addition to the communal areas, the facility will feature amenities such as a country kitchen and cafe, a physiotherapy room, a chapel, and a beauty salon and barber shop. These amenities aim to cater to the holistic needs of the residents, promoting their overall well-being and maintaining a sense of normalcy and routine.
