The Peterborough Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee (PACAC) and the Heritage Preservation Office are gearing up to host an enlightening House History Workshop on Thursday, June 22. This event aims to provide attendees with valuable insights, resources, and strategies for uncovering the captivating history behind Peterborough’s houses and buildings.
The workshop, scheduled to take place from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., will be held at the esteemed Peterborough Lions Club Community Centre located at 347 Burnham Street. Interested participants are encouraged to secure their spots early, as seating is limited. Online registration is available.
Stewart Hamilton, Chair of the PACAC, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming workshop, stating, “As chair of PACAC, it’s my pleasure to welcome you all to the first House History Workshop. PACAC has been working diligently to prepare this event for the summer of 2023. As a community, Peterborough boasts one of the largest inventories of pre-1900s homes in the province. Together, your house, along with others in your neighborhood, are part of the story and history that tells the tale of us as a community. Come and find out how to research your house, its history. What will you uncover about your house?”
Esteemed experts from various institutions will be in attendance, including representatives from Trent University, the Peterborough Public Library, Peterborough Museum & Archives, Trent Valley Archives, and the City’s Heritage Preservation Office. They will share valuable insights on the collections available at their institutions and provide guidance on accessing them effectively.
The House History Workshop is designed to ignite curiosity among attendees, fostering a desire to delve into the rich histories concealed within Peterborough’s buildings and homes. The event aims to inspire participants to embark on their own research projects, utilizing the knowledge gained during the workshop.
Moreover, the workshop intends to bolster the confidence of participants when it comes to exploring venues such as museums, archives, and libraries. Regardless of whether they reside in or own a heritage home, individuals from all walks of life are encouraged to join the workshop. Previous research experience is not a prerequisite for attendance, making it accessible to all who are eager to discover Peterborough’s architectural heritage.
The House History Workshop is a free event, allowing individuals to benefit from this incredible opportunity without any financial burden. It serves as a testament to the commitment of the PACAC and the Heritage Preservation Office in promoting a deeper appreciation for Peterborough’s architectural legacy.
