A finance report put before Peterborough city councillors this coming Monday night notes a 2023 property tax hike of 5.9 percent will be needed to avoid cuts to city services.
Councillor and city finance chair Andrew Beamer admits that while there are increasing pressures to keep any tax hike in line with those seen in recent years, the newly projected increase is a projection with much work yet to be done.
The big challenge, admits Councillor Beamer, is keeping any tax hike at or near those imposed in recent memory.
While working to whittle down the city budget to result in a reasonable tax hike is the goal, Councillor Beamer notes its equally important that taxpayers see visible signs of their dollars at work.
Moving forward, Councillor Beamer says city staff will work on “ironing these numbers out” while receiving budgets from outside agencies ahead of public consultations in the fall.
