The City of Peterborough has announced that it will be conducting staff training for the upcoming summer’s lifeguard program. The training will take place from June 27 to 30, at Beavermead and Rogers Cove beaches, in preparation for the program’s commencement on July 1.
To ensure the highest level of safety, additional staff in-service training will be held every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at both beaches. These training sessions will continue weekly from July 5 to August 23, guaranteeing that the lifeguards are well-prepared and equipped to handle any situation that may arise.
During the training period, all staff members will strictly adhere to the guidelines set by the provincial health authorities and the Lifesaving Society. The City of Peterborough urges the public to respect the lifeguards’ space during their training sessions, allowing them to complete their training safely and efficiently.
The lifeguard program at Beavermead and Rogers Cove beaches will be operational seven days a week, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., starting from July 1 until August 27. Residents and visitors can enjoy the beaches with the reassurance that trained lifeguards will be on duty to ensure their safety.
In an effort to improve accessibility, Beavermead beach will have a beach access mat in place from July 1 to August 27. This mat will provide a stable surface across the sand, enabling easier access to the water for everyone, including individuals with mobility challenges.
As part of its commitment to water quality, Peterborough Public Health will be monitoring the beaches’ water quality from June through the end of August. The water quality reports can be accessed online. In addition, the beaches will feature flags or signs indicating the current status of the water quality whenever lifeguards are present. For further details regarding water quality reporting at public beaches, please contact Peterborough Public Health at 705-743-1000.
For families with young children, the City of Peterborough will also be operating four wading pools during the summer season. These small, shallow pools cater to children up to approximately eight years old. Lifeguards will supervise the wading pools from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week, starting from July 1 until August 27. It is important to note that children must be accompanied by an adult when using the wading pools.
The City of Peterborough is dedicated to ensuring the safety and enjoyment of residents and visitors during the summer season. The lifeguard program, along with the vigilant monitoring of water quality, guarantees a pleasant and secure experience for all those who frequent the beaches and wading pools.
