With June 27th declared Canadian Multiculturalism Day, the New Canadians’ Centre is again providing residents the opportunity to embrace, celebrate and learn more about the many cultures that call Peterborough home.
The Canadian Multicultural Festival will be held June 23rd to 27th, featuring a week of events and programs that tell the story of numerous cultures through dance, sport, food and craft. New Canadians’ Centre executive director Andy Cragg says the festival brings attention to the vibrancy brought to Peterborough by new immigrants to the city.
Michelle Nguyen, the centre’s Peterborough Immigration Partnership Officer, says there has been much progress made in terms of Peterborough’s cultural diversity and that alone is worth celebrating.
Noting that racism is a reality in Peterborough, Cragg says the importance of awareness and education-raising events like the festival are more important than ever.
