With the lure of free ice Central Smith cream, Peterborough and the Kawarthas Visitor Centre rolled out the welcome mat July 16th, welcoming visitors and locals to check out what’s offered.
Joe Rees, director of tourism with Peterborough and the Kawarthas Economic Development, says some 100 to 150 people were expected to drop by but more than 250 showed up.
Rees notes while the centre caters to visitors’ to the region, offering trail guides, brochures, road maps and other material, local residents are increasingly taking advantage.
Rees says visitor centre staff members are key in ensuring both visitors’ and locals’ are made to feel welcome and depart with the information they’re looking for.
While it’s early in the summer tourism season, Rees says early indications are people are being more selective than they were a year ago in terms of choosing a vacation destination.
That said, Rees expects the region will more than hold its own in terms of tourism, noting that September has increasingly become a big month for visitor activity.
