Former longtime Peterborough city councillor Henry Clarke is among a group of Trent University alumni being honoured for their contributions to the community, their professions and/or the university.
Clarke, who served as a city councillor for 25 years and worked 43 years for PepsiCo-Quaker Oats before his 2019 retirement, is one of two 2023-24 recipients of the Spirit of Trent Award, the other recipient being accomplished Indigenous rights activist Alice Olsen Williams.
Clarke graduated from Trent in 1974 with an Honours BA in history. He says this honour has given him pause to reflect on what made his time at Trent special, specifically his professors recruited by inaugural university president Tom Symons.
Audio PlayerClarke says it was, and remains, special to attend Trent during its early years.
Audio PlayerClarke, who spent 27 years in the army reserve before his time on council, says his Trent education strengthened a love of history developed and nurtured at a young age.
Audio PlayerClarke, who lost his a bid for the mayor’s chair last October, has been busy post-council, including sitting as a board member with the Peterborough Humane Society and being more involved with the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment.
