The United Way of Peterborough and District launched its 2023-24 fundraising campaign Wednesday, revealing a goal of $1,450,000 before an enthusiastic gathering of supporters at the Healthy Planet Arena.
Many on hand were representatives of the 20 partner agencies that benefit from United Way funding, allowing them to offer services and programs that help the homeless, the impoverished, domestic violence victims and those struggling with mental health issues.
United Way CEO Jim Russell, who led the rah-rah spirit of the event, says the event continued the momentum of a campaign already well underway. He adds that the pandemic years, as tough as they were, served to rekindle the importance of helping those in need.
While acknowledging that inflation is affecting people’s ability to give, Russell says challenging economic times have also increased the need.
Russell is very optimistic the new campaign will hit its target.
