Otonabee Conservation is gearing up to celebrate National Forest Week with tree planting events at two prominent locations, Harold Town Conservation Area and the Peterborough Humane Society Animal Care Centre.
National Forest Week, observed from September 17 to September 23, is an annual occasion that encourages Canadians to delve into their forest heritage and recognize the essential role forests play in our culture, traditions, economy, and history.
Event #1 – TD Tree Days Event | National Forest Week Kick Off Scheduled for Saturday, September 16, 2023, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, this tree planting event takes place at the Harold Town Conservation Area located at 2611 Old Norwood Road, Otonabee-South Monaghan.
Event #2 – National Tree Day Celebration The National Tree Day Celebration is scheduled for Wednesday, September 20, 2023, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, at the Peterborough Humane Society Animal Care Centre, situated at 1999 Technology Dr, Peterborough. Partners in this event include the Peterborough Humane Society, community volunteers, and Otonabee Conservation.
All events are set to proceed regardless of the weather conditions, with Otonabee Conservation staff present onsite during the tree plantings.
The tree species being planted include native varieties such as eastern white cedar, ninebark, serviceberry, staghorn sumac, and black chokeberry. These plantings aim to offer shade, stabilize soils, and enhance local wildlife habitats.
The significance of these efforts is underscored by the growing impact of climate change on Canada’s landscapes, including escalating forest fires, floods, and extreme weather events. Tree planting endeavors contribute to climate resiliency by regulating temperatures, preventing soil erosion, reducing stormwater runoff and flooding, and capturing carbon dioxide, thus sequestering millions of kilograms of carbon over their lifespan.
