New supports for Peterborough homeless were announced Thursday (September 14th), with the former Trinity United Church to become home to a new daytime drop-in program and, over the course of the winter, provide overnight sleeping accommodation for 45 people.
Trinity Centre, located in the main hall of the former Reid Street church, will operated by One City Peterborough. Fueling the new shelter space is a $2.7 million in funding from the City spread out over the next three years.
One City Peterborough co-executive director Christian Harvey was among those on hand for the announcement. He says the initiative makes great sense on a number of different levels.
Harvey says the partnerships formed for this to happen have been key and are encouraging.
Harvey has nothing but praise for the former church’s leadership who saw fit to sell the church property to the Peterborough Poverty Reduction Network, making the new shelter possible.
Work to ready the space will continue over the next few weeks. Although a firm opening date hasn’t been set, Harvey says the sooner the better with the cold winter months on the horizon.
