Shortly after his parents bought their first farm near Lakefield in 1985, 10-year-old Mike Fallis started to see a possible future as a beef producer.
Close to 20 years later, he and his wife bought their own farm but, in 2005, a devastating fire ravaged their Selwyn livestock operation. Determined to overcome that major setback, they rebuilt and, today, Fallis Land and Cattle is thriving, not only home to a large commercial herd but also a place where the Fallis family “dove into the purebred thing pretty hard”
Fallis says the one constant over his many years as a beef producer has been the challenges presented and finding ways to overcome them.
Along with being the current president of the Peterborough County Cattlemen’s Association, Fallis is involved with 4-H and is passionate about its mission.
Fallis says challenges and threats will remain a constant – he references the mad cow crisis that ravaged the Canadian beef industry from 2003 to 2005 – but notes his motivation to continue doing what he does is strong, rooted in a simple premise.
