Two of Peterborough’s own have been making waves in their first season’s as professional hockey players in the American Hockey League.
New Jersey Devils first round draft pick, Chase Stillman, is currently playing for the Utica Comets, the Devils AHL affiliate, where he has 4 goals and 3 assists in 24 games.
One memorable highlight of Stillman’s rookie season so far was his first career professional goal that came in a game against none other than his brother, Riley, who was playing for the Rochester Americans. The sibling rivalry added an extra layer of excitement to an already thrilling achievement for Stillman, who has come a long way from his minor hockey days in Peterborough.
Meanwhile, JR Avon another hometown hero, has taken a different route to the professional stage. After going undrafted, Avon signed as a free agent with the Philadelphia Flyers and is currently donning the jersey of their AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. His early performances were nothing short of impressive, boasting 7 goals and 3 assists in his first 25 games as a professional.
The story of Stillman and Avon isn’t just about individual success; it’s about a journey that began in the local rinks of Peterborough where pair were minor hockey teammates, dreaming of playing at the highest level. Their dreams took a significant step forward last season as they each played pivotal roles in helping their hometown Petes secure the team’s first OHL Championship in 17 years.
