With the theme Black Excellence: A Heritage To Celebrate, A Future To Build, Black History Month will be marked locally in a big way come February.
On February 1st, 6 to 9 p.m. at the Peterborough Public Library, Mayor Jeff Leal will proclaim the month at a launch hosted by the Peterborough Community Race Relations Committee. Registration is required.
The event will feature Shanique Edwards, lead researcher with Black Mental Health Canada who specializes in racial trauma; Christine Maclin, a former UNIFOR human rights director who will share her journey navigating mental health challenges; and a performance by local activist and artist Sahira Q.
Meanwhile, the Peterborough Public Library will host Celebrate Black Voices with a number of events during the month, including a February 13th screening of Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody, followed by a discussion.
