Black History Month is a time to celebrate the distinguished community that’s been fostered in not only Peterborough, but all of Canada. The City of Peterborough has put together a long list of events and activities to connect locals to that very focus.
The Community Race Relations Committee of Peterborough was joined by Mayor Jeff Leal on the evening of Feb. 1st at the proclamation of Black History Month at the Peterborough Public Library.
Mayor Leal says the community ought to use this time to observe what’s been possible without the barriers of hate.
Mayor Leal says inclusivity has a ripple effect across multiple cultures.
As for events locally, the Peterborough Museum and Archives is currently hosting self-guided Black History Month-themed activities available to children at no-cost.
From Feb. 5-17, the Peterborough Public Library will display curated areas in both the children and adult areas labelled “Celebrate Black Voices.”
The library will also host two movies on Feb. 10, those being the short-film “Hair Love” and Disney’s “The Princess and The Frog.” Afterwards, expect another film on Feb. 13 when they will watch and discuss Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody. On the 15, the tweens can look forward to a book club that will look at Look Both Ways by Jason Reynolds.
With all of the events going on locally, Mayor Leal encourages locals to embrace them.
