Peterborough Action for Tiny Homes reaches a turning point in their sleeping cabin project as locals review what it could look like for those experiencing homelessness.
PATH’s recent information session detailed the current progress of the communal housing project that could bring up to 30 tiny homes to the “old Humane Society” property on 385 Lansdowne Street East. Residents were asked to give their feedback about the project that would then be utilized by PATH to enhance the project.
The repurposed facility promises amenities, such as a supervised kitchen, laundry facilities, and private showering facilities amongst security and social support staff.
Project Lead, Keith Dalton, says they’re awaiting approval to rezone the lot.
The program hopes to benefit resident experiencing homelessness with access to safe rooming and social services, but the project is facing some challenges. Dalton notes that PATH has restricted funding access for the developing project.
The project lead also mentions public education needs to be prioritized. He says the could saves lives, but could help taxpayers overall.
According to a release provided by PATH, a temporary use by-law application to permit the proposal for up to three years will be submitted in Winter 2024, once city staff has reviewed the requested technical studies. Dalton says we could see physical progress soon, but no buildings can be erected on the lot until Council approves rezoning.
A statutory public meeting will be hosted by the City of Peterborough at a future date. Design plans and building permits will also be required before proceeding with building modifications.
If you’d like to learn more, Dalton welcomes locals to visit the project site at 385 Lansdowne Street East, Peterborough at any time to tour the site.
