The Peterborough Police Service has announced a strategic collaboration with Équité Association, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to combatting insurance crime. Operating under the name Project CLASP, this partnership, alongside the Peterborough County OPP and Rama First Nations Police Services, aims to tackle the rising issue of auto theft in the Peterborough area.
Équité Association will leverage data analytics, vehicle identification, and coordinated investigations to combat insurance fraud and auto theft. Their recommendations for preventing auto theft include simple measures such as keeping doors locked, installing anti-theft devices, utilizing vehicle immobilizers, and investing in tracking systems.
Bryan Gast, VP of Investigative Services at Équité Association, stressed the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing auto theft, which cost Canada over $1.2 billion last year alone. Chief Stuart Betts of the Peterborough Police Service echoed this sentiment, noting that the area saw 143 reported vehicle thefts in 2023. He emphasized the significance of community involvement in spreading awareness and preventing auto theft.
Anonymous information can be reported to Peterborough Northumberland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at stopcrimehere.ca, with the possibility of being eligible for a $2,000 cash reward.
