In an effort to boost their roster, the Peterborough Petes have acquired overage forward Gavin Bryant from the Niagara IceDogs in exchange for a third-round pick in 2026 and a ninth-round pick in 2028. The announcement was made today by General Manager and Vice President of Operations Michael Oke.
Bryant, a seasoned centre from Ingersoll, Ontario, has established himself as a formidable player in the Ontario Hockey League. Drafted in the second round of the 2020 OHL Priority Selection by the Owen Sound Attack, he has put up 40 goals and 78 assists over 155 games. Last season, he not only led the IceDogs in scoring with 54 points in 62 games but also showcased his leadership as team captain.
Known for his versatility, Bryant can excel in both offensive and defensive roles, making him a valuable addition to the Petes’ lineup. His experience and leadership will be crucial for the team, particularly as they navigate a season with many young players.
Bryant’s reputation as a community-oriented player is underscored by his recent initiative, Gav’s Corner, aimed at supporting individuals affected by Type 1 Diabetes.
Head Coach Rob Wilson expressed enthusiasm about his newest player, stating that Bryant’s skills will bolster the team’s all-around performance, particularly on the power play.
The move returns the Petes to four overage players, while each team is only allowed to dress three per game, creating the same situation they faced before overage goaltender Liam Sztuska was picked up by the QMJHL’s Shawinigan Cataractes last week.
When asked what Bryant’s acquisition means for the other overagers on the team, Wilson says it means everyone needs to step up their game to earn their spot in the lineup.
While Bryant is recovering from double shoulder surgery, Wilson says he has been cleared for full-contact practices and is expected to integrate into the team during the next couple of weeks.
The Petes are gearing up for their next game against the Kingston Frontenacs on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. The game will feature a special banner-raising ceremony honouring alumnus and two-time Stanley Cup Champion Jamie Langenbrunner, with fans encouraged to arrive early for the festivities.
