A 16-foot birchbark canoe is taking shape in the Bata Library atrium at Trent University, where Métis canoe builder Alex Labelle is demonstrating traditional construction techniques.
The project offers a unique opportunity to observe and learn about the cultural importance of canoes in Indigenous history.
Hosted by Trent University Library & Archives and the First Peoples House of Learning, the build will conclude with a naming ceremony and launch on the Otonabee River.
Visitors can view the process in the Bata Library atrium, Monday to Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
