The Peterborough Police Service is alerting the public to a recent fraud scam that has affected local residents, primarily those in their 70s and 80s.
In the past week, several reports have emerged of individuals receiving calls on their landlines from someone claiming to be from a financial institution. The caller, using a spoofed caller ID, informs the victims that their debit and/or credit cards have been compromised and that a representative will come to their home to collect the cards, PIN, and personal information.
To date, community members have lost over $50,000 due to this scam.
Police remind residents that legitimate financial institutions will never send someone to collect cards or personal information at their home. If you receive a similar call, hang up immediately and contact Peterborough Police at 705-876-1122 x225 or report online at peterboroughpolice.com.
