Fire Station #2 on Marina Boulevard is officially open.
A ribbon-cutting event was held last week followed by a public open house.
Chief Chris Snetsinger says this new facility is truly state-of-the-art.
Snetsinger adds the station provides some immediate improvements for the fire service.
The station is the City’s first facility, designed and built as a net-zero carbon and net-zero energy building, seeking certification through the Canada Green Building Council.
Staff say it will use passive solar design and renewable energy sources to achieve its net-zero goals. A combination of high-efficiency, intelligent technologies including geothermal heat pumps, rooftop solar panels, automated control systems, LED lighting, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and heat-recovery systems are all included within the building. Constructed with a mass timber structure, a carbon sequestering material, the facility has been designed to reduce its carbon footprint.
