The Peterborough Petes snapped their 15-game losing skid last night with a 2-1 road win over the Saginaw Spirit, marking their first victory of the season.
After a tough 4-3 shootout loss to Oshawa on Tuesday, the Petes were determined to get back on track during their three-game road trip. Despite falling behind early to a James Guo goal just three minutes into the first period, Peterborough responded with a strong performance. Forward Francis Parish tied the game at 1-1 with a well-placed shot past Spirit goalie Kaleb Papineau, following a turnover and a quick two-on-one.
The game remained tied until late in the third period. With just 2:25 left on the clock, Brody Partridge won a clean faceoff to Carson Cameron, who beat Papineau for the game-winning goal. The Spirit pulled their goalie in a desperate attempt to equalize, but the Petes held their ground, including a crucial block by Ryder McIntyre, to secure the victory.
After game, Head Coach Rob Wilson expressed joy and pride in his team’s perseverance, acknowledging the weight of the 15-game losing streak.
Wilson highlighted the importance of the final faceoff play, where key contributions from Parish and Brennan Faulkner helped set up Cameron’s goal.
Goalie Zach Bowen also earned praise from Wilson for his performance, stopping 31 of 32 shots to secure his first win of the season.
Following the win, the energy on the ice was electric, with the players celebrating like they had just won a playoff series. Wilson described the feeling as pure relief, admitting that the long losing streak had been mentally exhausting for the team.
The Petes, now 1-11-1-3 on the season, will look to build on their hard-earned win as they head to Flint to take on the Firebirds tonight. You can listen to that game on Freq 90.5 with coverage getting underway just before 7pm
