Ontario is advancing its electric vehicle charging infrastructure with the construction of 40 new EV charging stations across Peterborough-Kawartha, as part of the province’s $63-million EV ChargeON Program.
This expansion supports Ontario’s push to increase accessibility to EV chargers in smaller communities, reducing dependency on urban-based infrastructure and promoting EV adoption.
Minister of Energy and Electrification Stephen Lecce announced the $63 million investment on Tuesday, saying they plan to make charging easier and more accessible in rural and medium-sized areas.
The new sites include charging stations at key locations such as Walmart Peterborough, Miskin Law Community Complex, and Peterborough Chrysler Ltd. Each will offer a mix of Level 2 and Level 3 chargers, supporting varying vehicle needs. Additionally, the Ultra-Low Overnight Electricity Price Plan aims to save EV users up to $90 per year, while a proposed EV Charger Discount Electricity Rate is under consideration.
MPP Dave Smith of Peterborough-Kawartha highlighted the convenience for EV drivers, noting that strategic placement of chargers “promotes adoption and provides critical support for local EV manufacturing.”
The program is aligned with Ontario’s focus on creating jobs and building a sustainable EV manufacturing sector, including new investments in battery technology and infrastructure across the province.
