Peterborough’s Porter Martone has been named captain of Team CHL for the upcoming CHL USA Prospects Challenge, showcasing the brightest young talents in junior hockey. The event, scheduled for November 26th in London and November 27th in Oshawa, pits the Canadian Hockey League’s top prospects against the USA Hockey National Team Development Program’s Under-18 squad.
Martone, an 18-year-old forward with the Brampton Steelheads of the OHL, has enjoyed a stellar start to the season. With 16 goals and 32 points in just 16 games, he ranks second in the league in scoring, trailing only Saginaw’s Michael Misa. Known for his leadership, Martone was named captain of the Steelheads this season and captained Team Canada to gold at the 2024 IIHF U18 World Championship, breaking Connor Bedard’s record for career points by a Canadian at the tournament.
Reflecting on Martone’s remarkable run, hockey analysts have pointed to his versatility, hockey IQ, and ability to thrive in high-pressure situations. His international accolades, including four medals in major tournaments, have established him as a cornerstone player, with his growing reputation making him a top prospect for the 2025 NHL Draft, where he’s projected as a very early first-round pick.
