Officers with the Peterborough County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police have charged a 39-year-old Peterborough resident with impaired driving after an incident involving a vehicle that appeared to evade a RIDE checkpoint.
The incident occurred on Monday, Dec. 23, just after 10 p.m., as officers conducted a R.I.D.E. program on Woodland Drive in Selwyn Township. Police observed a vehicle slow down before turning into a driveway. Moments later, the vehicle exited the driveway and headed in the opposite direction, with no one seen exiting the car during the stop.
Officers initiated a traffic stop and spoke with the driver. During the interaction, police determined the individual was under the influence of alcohol. The driver was asked to provide a breath sample using an Approved Screening Device, which resulted in a “Fail” reading.
The accused was arrested and charged with the following offences:
- Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
- Driving a motor vehicle with liquor readily available
His licence has been suspended for 90 days, and his vehicle has been impounded for seven days. He is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough on Jan. 28, 2025.
The OPP reminds motorists to plan ahead when consuming alcohol or drugs, urging the use of designated drivers, taxis, public transit, or overnight accommodations. Even small amounts of alcohol or drugs can impair judgment and driving ability.
