Peterborough County OPP is urging residents to secure their vehicles and valuables after a theft from an unlocked vehicle.
A Douro-Dummer Township resident contacted police after discovering that a purse containing identification, credit cards, and cash had been stolen from their unlocked vehicle on December 28th. Despite canvassing the area, officers were unable to locate the stolen items or identify a suspect.
The OPP highlighted the increased risk of theft during the holiday season, as criminals anticipate finding gifts and valuables in vehicles. Leaving items visible inside an unlocked car significantly increases the likelihood of theft.
To reduce the risk, the OPP offers the following tips:
- Never leave a running vehicle unattended.
- Lock your doors and roll up your windows.
- Keep valuables out of sight.
- Store your registration and proof of insurance in your wallet or purse, not in the glove box.
- Always pocket your keys.
- Park in well-lit areas at night or during extended periods.
The OPP encourages the public to contribute to community safety. Anyone with information about suspected unlawful activity is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at stopcrimehere.ca or call 1-800-222-8477.
