Yet another Peterborough Sports Hall of Fame inductee has passed away.
Iris Mary Rielly died December 24th at age 98.
Peterborough born and raised, Rielly was a pioneer in the sport of synchronized swimming. Paired with duet partner Jean Millard, the duo won a U.S. AAU junior national synchronized swimming championship in 1948 – the first Canadians to do so. Seven years later, as members of the Peterborough Ornamental Swimming Club, the duo placed second at the Pan American Games in Mexico City. Rielly was inducted into the Peterborough Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.
In addition to her athletic exploits, Rielly volunteered for many years at the former Peterborough Civic Hospital and, for a time, was president of the hospital auxiliary.
