An alleged speeding incident in Marmora and Lake Township has resulted in a seizure and drug-trafficking charges for Trent Hills and Peterborough residents, say OPP.
On Sunday, Dec. 29, at about 11 p.m., an officer with Central Hastings OPP was reportedly conducting speed enforcement on Matthew Street when a pick-up truck was allegedly clocked travelling at more than 70 km/h in a 50-zone.
Following a traffic stop, police said a suspended driver was arrested on multiple counts of prohibited driving. Police further allege that a search of the vehicle turned up quantities of suspected cocaine, suspected hydromorphone pills, contraband cigarettes, more than $400 in cash and items typically associated with drug-trafficking.
As a result, police said a 45-year-old man from Trent Hills was charged with: Two counts of possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, failure to comply with a probation order, failure to comply with a release order, two counts of operation of a vehicle while prohibited, three counts of driving while under suspension, speeding, driving with liquor readily available, and possession of unmarked cigarettes.
The accused was held in custody for bail hearing before the courts in Belleville on Monday, Dec. 30, reported OPP.
Police also said a 37-year-old Peterborough resident was charged with two counts of possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking. The accused was released from custody and will appear in court on Jan. 20, 2025, said police.
None of the above charges have been proven in court.
