Northumberland–Peterborough South MP Philip Lawrence is voicing concerns following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation announcement and decision to prorogue parliament.
Lawrence, a Conservative MP, says Canadians deserve more than what he describes as a “lame duck government” in the face of mounting economic and foreign policy challenges.
Trudeau announced Monday that he will step down as Liberal leader but intends to remain as Prime Minister until the party selects his successor. Lawrence criticized this move, citing uncertainty at a time when incoming U.S. President Donald Trump is threatening tariffs that could, in Lawrence’s words, “cause tremendous economic damage.”
Adding to his criticism, Lawrence expressed frustration with the decision to prorogue parliament until March, arguing it leaves Canada in a precarious position.
Trudeau’s resignation marks the end of nearly a decade as Liberal leader and signals a period of transition for both his party and the country. However, Lawrence believes what’s truly needed is an election to give Canadians a government with renewed support.
