The passing of former US president Jimmy Carter has brought forth remembrances from around the globe, including a social media-posted tribute from the Peterborough-Kawartha chapter of Habitat for Humanity.
With his wife Rosalynn, Carter first volunteered with Habitat for Humanity near their Plains, Georgia home more than 40 years ago. Until 2019, the Carters rolled up their sleeves on house builds around the world, and their Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project inspired more than 108,000 volunteers to build, renovate and repair close to 4,500 Habitat homes.
Local Habitat for Humanity CEO Susan Zambonin says the Carters’ dedication to the organization’s mission and ambassadorship was, and remains, invaluable.
Zambonin says stories abound of the Carters’ dedication to Habitat for Humanity, citing one example.
Noting President Carter’s selfless contributions mirrored the way he lived his life, both personally and presidentially, adding that his all-in involvement has led to one enduring myth.
Carter will have a state funeral Thursday at Washington National Cathedral. President Joe Biden will deliver a eulogy.
