Members of the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police are investigating two unrelated serious injury collisions that occurred on Thursday in the Municipality of Port Hope.
Collision on County Road 28
At approximately 9:40 a.m., OPP, Emergency Medical Services, and the Fire Department responded to a two-vehicle collision on County Road 28 near County Road 9 and Boundary Road.
Two passenger vehicles sustained significant damage, and a third vehicle was found in a ditch. Three individuals were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Tragically, a family pet did not survive the collision.
County Road 28 was closed for several hours while crews cleared the scene and investigators examined the crash site. The road reopened around midday.
Highway 401 Multi-Vehicle Collision
Shortly after 11:30 a.m., police responded to a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 401 westbound. The crash involved approximately 15 vehicles, including two tractor-trailers.
Emergency responders transported five people to a local hospital. Unfortunately, a 70-year-old man from Colborne was pronounced deceased, while four others suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Highway 401 was closed at Burnham Street, with diversions in place while OPP Technical Collision Investigators worked to reconstruct the incident. Cleanup efforts and the investigation kept the highway closed until approximately 2:45 a.m. the following morning.
