An Extreme Cold Warning is in effect for Peterborough City, Lakefield, and Southern Peterborough County tonight through Wednesday morning. An Arctic airmass is bringing wind chill values near minus 30°C, as low as minus 35°C, making conditions dangerously cold.
Residents are urged to take precautions against frostbite and cold-related health issues such as shortness of breath, chest pain, and numbness in fingers and toes. Frostbite can develop in minutes on exposed skin, especially with strong winds.
To stay safe, it’s recommended to dress in layers, wear wind-resistant outerwear, and cover exposed skin when outside. It’s also important to check on vulnerable neighbours and family members during this cold snap.
Temperatures are expected to moderate by Wednesday afternoon, but until then, officials say to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure …and remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s also too cold for pets.
