As both Ottawa and Queen’s Park continue to strategize in the face of the threatened 25 percent tariff on Canadian goods imported by the United States, the Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus has reiterated its full support for a strong alliance between the two countries.
During last week’s Rural Ontario Municipal Association Conference in Toronto, caucus members, who represent 103 municipalities, sent letters to the New York Association of Counties and the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative reinforcing its collaboration in terms of cross-border trade and matters of mutual interest.
Caucus chair and Peterborough County Warden Bonnie Clark says eastern Ontario exports $42.5 billion in industrial and commercial products annually, a large chunk of which is produced in the county.
Warden Clark says the despite the economic challenges that loom, there are opportunities.
As for any possible change in governments at both the federal and provincial levels, Warden Clark says her practice of maintaining good relations with representatives of all political will stand her in good stead.
