Trent University is moving forward with a five-year housing strategy aimed at addressing local housing shortages, adding nearly 1,300 new student residence spaces and more than 200 long-term care beds in Peterborough.
The university plans to expand on-campus housing with the redevelopment of Otonabee College residence and the construction of Gidigaa Migizi College, bringing over 900 new student units. Additionally, a land lease near Water Street will allow for the development of 324 townhouse-style residence spaces for upper-year students by fall 2026.
Trent is also developing an Integrated Seniors Village, which will include a provincially funded long-term care home to help reduce the waitlist for senior care in Peterborough, one of Canada’s oldest demographic communities.
By 2028, Trent’s projects will account for 32% of the city’s new housing target, aiming to support both students and the broader community. The university has also partnered with Fleming College and Age-friendly Peterborough to promote home-sharing through SpacesShared, connecting students with older adults offering rental spaces.
