The City of Peterborough will take direct control of its water services starting April 1, 2025, as part of a transition from the Peterborough Utilities Commission.
City officials say there will be no immediate changes for customers. Billing will remain the same for the time being, with Peterborough Utilities continuing to issue water bills after April 1. Customers will also continue using the same customer service contact information for a period after the transition.
The move follows a decision by City Council in June 2024 to streamline governance by transferring water assets and operations from the Peterborough Utilities Commission, a local board of the city, to a city-run service. The same team of employees currently delivering water services will be integrated into the City of Peterborough to ensure continuity.
Additionally, Riverview Park and Zoo, which was included in the transfer, will remain publicly owned and operated. Officials say visitors can expect the same level of animal care and service that has made the facility a community staple.
Customers will be notified in advance of any future changes to billing. In the meantime, water services inquiries can still be directed to 705-748-6900, Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
