Officers with the Peterborough Police Service stopped nearly 1,200 vehicles during two RIDE spot checks over the weekend, resulting in one impaired driving charge and multiple sobriety tests.
On Saturday night, police checked 200 vehicles and conducted 15 sobriety tests, leading to one impaired driving charge and one warning. The following night, 994 vehicles were stopped, with 11 drivers undergoing sobriety testing.
At approximately 11:20 p.m. Saturday, officers conducting a RIDE check on Water Street near Carnegie Avenue stopped an 18-year-old Newcastle man. The driver was charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus). He also received two provincial offence notices under the Liquor Licence Act for being under 19 with liquor and having an open container of liquor in a vehicle.
The accused was issued an automatic 90-day licence suspension and had his vehicle impounded for seven days. He was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on April 22nd.
