Otonabee Conservation has extended its Water Safety Statement for the region, urging residents to remain cautious as the region enters a week of rainfall. Originally issued on March 13, the statement is now in effect until March 27, due to the combination of anticipated precipitation and melting snow, which will continue to push water levels higher.
While flooding is not currently expected, authorities are reminding residents to stay vigilant, particularly around watercourses. The ongoing weather conditions mean that the risk of slippery, unstable shorelines remains high.
Otonabee Conservation is encouraging residents to monitor local water levels through resources such as the Trent-Severn Waterway and Otonabee Conservation websites. They also recommend preparing an emergency kit and moving valuables from low-lying areas to higher ground.
For those considering outdoor activities, the statement advises against recreational pursuits near water, especially on ice-covered bodies of water, where the risk of falling through remains a concern.
Residents are urged to report any ice rescues immediately by calling 911, as attempting to rescue someone from icy waters can be extremely dangerous.
The statement will remain in effect until Thursday, unless updated earlier. For more details, visit Otonabee Conservation’s website for additional flood safety and forecasting information.
