Peterborough Regional Health Centre’s (PRHC) Cardiac Cath Lab has performed nearly 5,900 procedures since two newly upgraded suites opened in 2022, thanks to a $3.55 million investment fully funded by PRHC Foundation donors.
The upgrades, completed between September 2021 and December 2022, were identified as a priority in PRHC’s $60 million fundraising campaign. From 2020 to 2023, donations poured in from individuals, businesses, and community groups, with fundraising appeals sent through mail and online. Some donors directed proceeds from sales and events to the cause, while others took on personal fundraising challenges or committed to one-time or monthly gifts.
The result is a state-of-the-art facility where PRHC’s team of four interventional cardiologists perform approximately 2,500 cardiac procedures annually, including 300 emergency stenting procedures during heart attacks. The new imaging technology provides higher-definition visuals, integrates multiple imaging tools, and reduces radiation exposure by up to 75%, allowing for more precise and efficient treatment.
In the face of physician shortages, Dr. Warren Ball, Interventional Cardiologist & Head of Cardiology, says keeping up with the latest technology is crucial for hospitals like PRHC.
Audio PlayerThe improvements have already made an impact, not only in patient care but also in staff recruitment. One of PRHC’s interventional cardiologists joined the hospital in 2022, drawn in part by the cutting-edge equipment. The upgrades have ensured that more patients can receive life-saving cardiac care close to home rather than travelling to Kingston or the Greater Toronto Area.
Having the latest technology on site allows staff to provide immediate care during critical moments, which Dr. Ball says can can make all the difference.
Audio PlayerDr. Ball emphasized how the generosity of the community and foundation donors made it possible for PRHC to acquire the latest technologies, ensuring top-tier care despite the challenges of healthcare funding.
Audio PlayerThe PRHC Foundation has raised $52.9 million of its $60 million goal, with the next major focus on expanding cardiac services further by introducing an electrophysiology program. The addition of this new service would allow PRHC to diagnose and treat heart rhythm disorders locally, further strengthening the hospital’s ability to provide world-class cardiac care in Peterborough.
