A significant spring ice storm is expected to hit parts of Ontario, including the Peterborough area, from late Friday through Monday.
Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a special weather statement warning of widespread freezing rain, with ice accretion amounts ranging from 5 to 15 mm. Some areas could see more than 20 mm, leading to potential power outages and hazardous travel conditions.
The storm may also bring snowfall and ice pellets, with accumulations of 5 to 15 cm expected in parts of central and northeastern Ontario. Slippery surfaces and broken tree branches due to ice build-up are also concerns.
The exact areas of heaviest ice accumulation remain uncertain, but central and eastern Ontario, between Parry Sound and Kingston, are at the highest risk. Weather warnings will be issued as the system approaches.
